ArcelorMittal is proud to announce that Poland’s InPost Group has started producing central modules for parcel lockers, using low carbon-emissions XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel from ArcelorMittal. This is an important step in implementing the decarbonisation strategy and an example of real actions to reduce emissions in the supply chain.
The cooperation between the InPost Group and ArcelorMittal Steel Services Centres Europe began in 2011 when ArcelorMittal’s Magnelis®, a flat carbon steel coated on both sides with a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy that provides excellent corrosion resistance, became the primary material for producing parcel lockers. Since then, with the dynamic development of the company and the expansion of the parcel locker network, InPost has systematically increased its demand for this key raw material.
In response to global climate challenges, the InPost Group and ArcelorMittal Steel Centres Europe, with the support of ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, engaged in complex discussions about using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced Magnelis® steel for parcel locker production.
The talks began at the beginning of 2023, with a breakthrough meeting in June of the same year and a product presentation involving CTSs, ultimately leading to an order for a test batch. The next step was inviting ArcelorMittal Steel Services Centres Europe representatives to a dialogue session organised by InPost in Warsaw and participating in a second summary session. Both meetings resulted in InPost deciding to purchase XCarb® recycled and renewably produced Magnelis®.
The InPost Group placed orders with ArcelorMittal Steel Services Centre Poland for 1,000 tonnes of the product. Fulfilling these orders is an important step towards decarbonisation and further minimising environmental impact. InPost Group's Decarbonisation Strategy is an integral complement to its business strategy. InPost has joined the SBTi initiative and is one of the first in the Polish market to target net-zero by 2040.
XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is made in an electric arc furnace at ArcelorMittal Sestao in Spain, with a minimum 75% of recycled steel and using 100% renewable electricity. The electricity used is independently verified and has a ‘Guarantee of Origin’ ensured by purchasing of ‘Renewable Energy Certificates’. XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel which is coated with Magnelis® results in CO2 emissions per tonne that are 65% lower than the same product made via the conventional steelmaking route.
InPost is a leader in logistics solutions for the e-commerce industry in Europe. At the end of 2024, the InPost Group had more than 82,000 out-of-home points, including almost 47,000 Parcel Lockers and more than 35,000 PUDO (pick up, drop off) points in nine countries (UK, France, Poland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands). InPost also provides courier and fulfilment services to e-commerce sellers, working with around 100,000 e-tailers. During 2024 alone, the company handled more than one billion parcels.
