Hebels, Gebroeders Meijer, BAM & ArcelorMittal: Sparking a chain reaction in sustainable construction

October 2025

Sustainability in construction begins with the materials we choose - and for many, that source is ArcelorMittal steel. As a global steel leader, ArcelorMittal is driving the transition to low-carbon building materials through its XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, including hot dip galvanized steel and Magnelis®, made with at least 75% recycled scrap and powered by 100% renewable electricity.

At the next link in the chain is Hebels, a Dutch steel service centre with a long-standing partnership with ArcelorMittal. Hebels supplies tailor-made coils and sheets to customers in the construction sector. Moreover, thanks to XCarb® steel, Hebels delivers these steels with a significantly lower carbon footprint.

One of those customers is Gebroeders Meijer, a manufacturer of air duct systems. By using the steel from Hebels, they meet the growing demand for sustainable materials from clients like BAM, one of the Netherlands’ largest construction companies. An extra asset is Hebels’ ability to deliver tailor-made coils and sheets which help manufacturers reduce waste and improve their efficiency.

These air ducts are now part of real-world projects - schools, office buildings, and utility structures - where sustainability is no longer optional, but essential.

How ArcelorMittal steel forms the foundation of a powerful and sustainable value chain:

  • ArcelorMittal produces certified low carbon-emissions steel: XCarb®
  • Hebels, a trusted Dutch steel service centre since 1974, customizes and distributes it
  • Gebroeders Meijer uses it to manufacture air duct systems
  • BAM integrates these components into sustainable schools, offices, and utility buildings

The result? Real-world projects with measurable CO₂ savings, backed by XCarb® steel certificates and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), proving the environmental impact.

This is more than a supply chain. It’s a sustainability chain, and it all starts the partnership between ArcelorMittal and Hebels. We’re proud to be part of this chain!

“Hebels was the obvious choice,” says a representative from Gebroeders Meijer. “Their ability to supply low carbon-emissions steel and deliver customized sheet and coil products aligns perfectly with our goals and those of our clients. It’s a win-win for us and our customers. We’re not just talking about sustainability, we’re delivering it.”
