XCarb® helps deliver Swegon’s low carbon HVAC targets
Swegon Group and ArcelorMittal are building on their partnership in reducing carbon emissions for Swegon’s Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) products. HVAC is a fast-growing part of the building and construction market, driven by demand for energy-efficient buildings. increased urbanisation and a growing focus on the need for healthy indoor environments.
Swegon Group AB is an international market leader in indoor environment solutions, offering air handling, ventilation, heating, cooling and climate optimisation systems from 23 production plants in Europe, North America and India.
Core to Swegon’s business ethos is its long-term commitment to sustainability, supporting the transition to more sustainable buildings through energy efficiency, circularity and healthy indoor environments. It has brought together its initiatives to reduce embodied carbon under a concept called RE:3, based on principles of circularity – RE:duce, RE:use and RE:vitalise. The Group was among the first in the industry to publish EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) for its products and has a significant quantity of EPDs in its product portfolio.
Swegon and ArcelorMittal have been partners for over 20 years. In 2023 Swegon received its first Magnelis® delivery produced from XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, for testing and evaluation. They produced a concept air handling unit and sound attenuator which achieved a 34% lower carbon footprint compared to the traditional version.
As result, In 2024 Swegon moved into serial production with XCarb® Magnelis® steel for air handling units produced in Kvänum, Sweden. The Group has been rolling out XCarb® steel across its wider product range including roof hoods, wall hoods, louvres, filter cabinets, attenuators, dampers and chilled beams. ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D team worked closely with Swegon on the initial integration of the new steel material into their manual and automatic processing machines. XCarb® has already been implemented in three additional Swegon sites namely Arvika, Borås and Tomelilla. A third phase of the roll-out has been incorporating the XCarb® steel into GOLD/SILVER air handling units with pre-painted external panels in Granite® HDX.

Magnelis® is a premium, highly durable metallic coated steel produced by ArcelorMittal, offering superior corrosion resistance to conventional galvanised steel for harsh environments, and is ideal for a range of HVAC systems. XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is a low carbon-emissions steel made in an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) with minimum 75% scrap content and produced using 100% renewable electricity. This production process reduces CO2 emissions significantly compared with the traditional steelmaking route in a blast furnace. XCarb® recycled and renewably produced Magnelis® has an approximately 70% lower CO2 footprint compared with Magnelis® produced via the conventional blast furnace route.
Swegon has achieved significant reductions in carbon emissions through its transition to XCarb® steel. Its CLA attenuator has validated a 25% reduction compared to the previous version using non-recycled steel; its PACIFIC chilled beam a 33% reduction; and its GOLD/SILVER air handling units a 30% reduction.

As the construction and real estate sectors continue to adapt to increasing sustainability requirements, HVAC solutions play an important role in both operational efficiency and material impact. Swegon is contributing to a more resource-efficient and circular construction industry with the launch, in early 2026, of the next-generation GOLD/SILVER air handling units. Designed to meet rising HVAC and building-sector demands, over 70% of the total steel weight is now comprised of recycled steel and almost 60% of the total material weight is recycled material. As a result, the new unit - significantly reduces its embodied carbon while maintaining the performance and reliability expected of a GOLD unit.
