Steels for solar energy generation systems

Solar photovoltaic plants are designed to last at least 20 to 25 years. They are built in various type of climates (tropical, industrial…), of locations (sea shores, islands…) or geological soils (including the most aggressive). Solar panels can also be installed on roofs, sensitive to excessive load and wind.

The PV panels supporting structures must withstand these conditions while generating the minimal maintenance costs. These requirements are extremely demanding, and therefore ArcelorMittal offers Magnelis®, a steel with excellent corrosion resistance, at least three times better than traditional galvanised steel. Magnelis® exhibits a self-healing effect in case of scratches and which also improves edge protection.

With excellent in-use properties and wide range of feasibility, Magnelis® is one of the best in class and most cost-effective alternatives to post-galvanised steels. Since its launch in 2012, Magnelis® has been selected by many solar players around the world to provide superior protection for long-lasting mounting structures, even in the most adverse environments, and for several very large installations.

Magnelis® range is constantly improving and enriching, and the latest innovation is a new range specially created for rammed poles in soils.

And last but not least, the combination of Magnelis® with the new high strength steel grade S550GD Hyper® offers additional opportunities of structural improvement for solar structures leading to reduced weight and costs.

Steel roofs and supporting structures for solar panels must offer a lifetime performance which exceeds the lifespan of solar modules. Installation should be simple and maintenance should be low cost, addressing safety at all levels.

Granite® pre-coated steel for roofing has been developed to guarantee the roof's performance over the lifetime of the solar panels. In some building locations, such as industrial or marine environments, a superior coating must be selected, such as Granite® HDXtreme. The textured surface of Granite® Deep Mat and Granite® Storm reduces the risk of slipping.
ArcelorMittal’s Granite ® range for solar roofs is guaranteed for a minimum of 20 years, and available in a palette of 120 colours, finishes and patterns.

A roof made of Granite® with supporting structures made of Magnelis® is the ideal combination for rooftop solar installations.
