Amstrong® range extended to offer widest dimensional feasibility on the market

Amstrong® is a family of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) from ArcelorMittal which offer high tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and excellent formability. The name Amstrong® is used for grades with tensile strengths below 650 MPa, while Amstrong® Ultra is the name for grades above 650 MPa. ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products has recently expanded the dimensional feasibility of the Amstrong® family to ensure we offer the widest range on the market. ArcelorMittal has also invested in new equipment which will enhance the mechanical and surface properties of our Amstrong® and Relia® brands.

“Amstrong® now comes in standard thicknesses from 1.5 to 25 mm and widths of up to 2150 mm,” notes Jan de Moor, Marketing Manager for Heavy Machinery at ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. “Amstrong® Ultra 700 is now available in thicknesses from 4 to 20 mm, and widths up to 2000 mm.”

The Amstrong® family offers customers the option of lightening their products using a higher strength grade in a lower thickness. By lightweighting their products in this way, customers reduce the amount of steel required and the carbon intensity of their products. ArcelorMittal can provide co-engineering support to help customers optimise the design of applications which use the Amstrong® family.

Dimensional feasibility extended

New products in the range include:

Product

New thicknesses available

Amstrong® 355 to S420

From 3 to 25 mm (up to width 2000 mm)

Heavy gauge pickled Amstrong® 355 to S420

Up to 15 mm (width 1500 mm)

Amstrong® Ultra 700

Now available in 4, 5, and 6 mm in widths up to 2000 mm

Heavy gauge pickled Amstrong® Ultra 700

Available up to 10 mm x 1500 mm

Amstrong® Ultra 900 and S960

From 3 to 8 mm in widths up to 1500 mm (3 mm in development)

Relia® 400 & 450 wear resistant sheets

From 3 to 8 mm in widths up to 1850 mm (3 mm in development)

The standard black Amstrong® range is also now available with Clean Surface. This guarantees a cleaner surface and is ideal for applications where surface quality is important. Better surface quality means faster laser cutting, welding, post-galvanising, or painting.

The high strength of Amstrong® Ultra allows OEMs to create equipment with higher payloads, better reach, and better durability

Higher strength and product improvements in 2023

ArcelorMittal is continuing to develop the Amstrong® family with even higher strength grades in the Amstrong® Ultra range. Amstrong® Ultra 1100 will be the first to be commercialised in thicknesses up to 8 mm. Material for trial orders is expected to become available in the fourth quarter of 2023. ArcelorMittal is now looking for customers who are interested in testing this material. Contact your local ArcelorMittal team for more information.

We are also working to meet the future processing and quality demands of our customers who use the high-strength Amstrong® and wear-resistant Relia® families. One of the latest innovations for the Amstrong® and Relia® families is the introduction of stretch levellers at our plants in Bremen (Germany) and Krakow (Poland) explains Jan de Moor: “These state-of-the-art investments will allow ArcelorMittal to produce ultra high strength and wear-resistant steels with excellent mechanical properties, flatness, and surface properties. These improvements will be available on coils, sheets, and slitted strips. The stretch levellers are expected to become fully operational in the course of 2023.”

The investment introduces automated control and measurement of the flatness, internal stresses, and surface properties of the strip, to the steel production process. It will enable ArcelorMittal to produce ultra high strength and wear resistant coils with excellent mechanical properties, flatness, and surface properties. Customers will benefit from trouble-free processing during their manufacturing operations.

About Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra

ArcelorMittal’s Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra grades are produced at our mills in Dunkirk and Fos-sur-Mer (France), Bremen (Germany), and Krakow (Poland). All mills offer integrated cutting services for steel sheets. Bremen and Krakow also have integrated steel service centres which can provide full processing.

Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra have good weldability and are compatible with Class A galvanisation solutions for corrosion protection.
