Iconic Granite® Silky Shine jewel wins people's prize

The Royal Dutch Mint building in Houten (the Netherlands), better known as the Dutch Vault, has won the People’s Choice Award in the 2020 Infosteel Steel Construction Competition. The spectacular facade of this iconic building was created with high-gloss Granite® Silky Shine from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. The result is an exterior that looks like a safe, with almost no visible openings.

Glittering facade adds lightness and movement

The Dutch Vault provides 13,000 m2 of production, storage, and office space for the Royal Dutch Mint. The unique facade is made from Isis 55-120/7 profiles which were selected in consultation between ArcelorMittal and the Belgian architectural team of wilma wastiau. The profiles were manufactured by ArcelorMittal’s Specials department in Tiel (the Netherlands).

Each triangle of the facade is oriented in a different direction to give the building a sense of lightness and movement. A substructure, made with Magnelis® from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, supports the panels.

Colour consistency achieved across the building

ArcelorMittal supplied the Granite® Silky Shine with an 80 gloss unit (GU) finish to maximise the play of light and shadow on the building and the reflections in the water. The Granite® Silky Shine Gold was produced in one batch to ensure colour consistency across the whole facade. The colour is expected to remain vibrant for at least the next 30 years.
