  • Safer roads with steel barriers

Stronger steels and high performance coatings increase safety and lower barrier costs

Until a few years ago, European standards for safety barriers, also called crash barriers, prescribed the materials to be used. Today, the EN 1317 standard sets the performance levels to be achieved, giving manufacturers the freedom to choose the material.

Choosing the right steel grade can make a huge difference to the performance and cost of your safety barrier solutions.

ArcelorMittal’s high strength steels such as Amstrong® 420MC, Amstrong® 460MC, and metallic coated steels such as HX420LAD and HX460LAD exhibit superior performance during a collision and improve safety. When combined with coatings such as Magnelis® or batch galvanisation, the life of the barrier can be extended significantly.

Combining a high strength steel with a superior coating leads to the following advantages:

  • Better safety performance – the steel guardrails are able to contain heavier vehicles, even though the working width of the barrier is reduced.
  • Reduced production and installation costs due to the optimisation of the steel barriers.
