As part of their low carbon-emissions steel production partnership, Vestas has selected ArcelorMittal to supply low carbon-emissions steel heavy plates for the Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm, developed by Vattenfall off Germany's North Sea coast. This is the second project between the two companies involving XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates.
Developed by Vattenfall, the Nordlicht wind farm is located off Germany’s North Sea coast, some 85 kilometres north of the island of Borkum and is composed of two sites: Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2.
Construction of Nordlicht I is set to begin in 2026, with the wind turbines expected to be installed in 2027. The entire wind farm will be fully operational in 2028 and is expected to generate approximately 6 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually, enough to power 1.6 million German households.
Nordlicht 1 has a capacity of around 1GW. The site will be composed of 68 Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines. The wind farm will feature turbines towers partially made with low carbon-emissions steel and Vestas has once again selected ArcelorMittal as the sole low carbon-emissions heavy plate supplier.
Our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates, based on slabs made with a minimum of 95% high quality scrap and 100% renewable electricity, have a 66 percent lower carbon footprint than heavy plates made via the conventional blast furnace route (independently certified by an Environmental Product Declaration).
