The durability of culverts is an important cost issue because of the large number of units involved and because replacement of in-service culverts can require expensive demolition and reconstruction of associated roadwork. Consequently, the design service life requirement for highway culverts commonly approaches 100 years. A challenge that Magnelis® can tackle. It represents the best design alternative to classical hot dip galvanised when considering a compromise between conservative design and overall cost.
Magnelis® is a flat carbon steel product coated on both sides with a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy. This alloy, composed of 93.5% zinc, 3.5% aluminium and 3% magnesium, is applied by means of a continuous hot dip galvanising process. This optimum chemical composition has been selected to provide the best results in terms of corrosion resistance. We recommend a coating mass of 310g/m² for this application.
Hot dip galvanised heavy coatings (ideally Z725 for this application) is another possibility for this application. The 725 g/m² coating provide lasting corrosion resistance for this demanding application. ArcelorMittal unmatched accuracy in thickness measurements allows you to make more reliable lifetime calculations for your steel solutions.
