A drawn can carries a strong message to the consumer, and has eye-catching appeal. It is also a unique way to demonstrate the outstanding forming ability of steel. However, the market demands an attractive appearance (smooth surface, good print quality), and the ability to withstand seaming, retorting, and palletisation.
Drawing requires specific steel grades which exhibit low anisotropy. Low anisotropy minimises trim and preserves print quality after deformation.
Both batch annealing (BA) and continuous annealing (CA) are used. For round cans, high strength grades in low thicknesses are recommended.
For retorting without counter-pressure, grades TH580 and TH620 are the most cost-effective solution.
For retorting with counter-pressure, softer grades such as TH330 are suitable.
Metallic coating: Tin coating or ECCS. ECCS can be used when the can’s contents are not aggressive. ECCS also assists lacquer adhesion.
