Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra: going from strength to strength

The Amstrong® family offers customers the option of lightening their products using a higher strength grade in a lower thickness. By lightweighting their products in this way, customers reduce the amount of steel required and the carbon intensity of their products. ArcelorMittal can provide co-engineering support to help customers optimise the design of applications which use the Amstrong® family.

Dimensional feasibility extended

ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products has recently expanded the dimensional feasibility of the Amstrong® family to ensure we offer the widest range on the market. Amstrong® now comes in standard thicknesses from 1.5 to 25 mm and widths of up to 2150 mm, while Amstrong® Ultra grades are now available in thicknesses from 4 to 20 mm and widths up to 2000 mm.

New products in the range include:

New thicknesses available

Amstrong® 355 to S420

From 3 to 20 mm (up to width 2000 mm)

Heavy gauge pickled Amstrong® 355 to S420

Up to 15 mm (width 1500 mm)

Amstrong® Ultra 700

Now available in 4, 5, and 6 mm in width 2000 mm & 3mm in width 1500 mm

Amstrong® Ultra 900 and S960

Up to 8 mm (width 1500 mm)

Relia® 400 & 450 wear resistant sheets

Up to 8mm and max width 1850 mm

The standard black Amstrong® range is also now available with Clean Surface. This guarantees a cleaner surface and is ideal for applications where surface quality is important.

Higher strength and product improvements in 2023

ArcelorMittal is continuing to develop the Amstrong® family with even higher strength grades in the Amstrong® Ultra range. Amstrong® Ultra 1100 will be the first to be commercialised in thicknesses up to 8 mm. Material for trial orders is expected to become available in the fourth quarter of 2023. ArcelorMittal is now looking for customers who are interested in testing this material. Contact your local ArcelorMittal team for more information.

We are also working to meet the future processing and quality demands of our customers who use the high-strength Amstrong® and wear-resistant Relia® families. One of the latest innovations for these steels is the introduction of a new coil-to-coil line at ArcelorMittal Bremen (Germany). This state-of-the-art investment will improve the shape of hot rolled, high-strength steel strips when it becomes fully operational in the final quarter of 2023.

The investment introduces stretch levelling, including automated control and measurement of the flatness, internal stresses, and surface properties of the strip, to the steel production process. It will enable ArcelorMittal to produce ultra high strength and wear resistant coils with excellent mechanical properties, flatness, and surface properties when they are levelled into sheets or slit into strips. Customers will benefit from trouble-free processing during their manufacturing operations.

About Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra

All Amstrong® advanced high strength steels offer high yield and tensile strength, excellent formability, toughness at low temperatures, and fatigue resistance. ArcelorMittal offers the broadest dimensional feasibility and thicknesses up to 25 mm. Amstrong® Ultra grades additionally offer ultra high yield strengths ranging from 650 up to 1100 MPa.

Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra have good weldability and are compatible with Class A galvanisation solutions for corrosion protection.

ArcelorMittal’s Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra grades are produced at our mills in Dunkirk and Fos-sur-Mer (France), Bremen (Germany), and Krakow (Poland). All mills offer integrated cutting services for steel sheets. Bremen and Krakow also have integrated steel service centres which can provide full processing.

Our Amstrong® Calculator can help to identify the emission savings you can achieve by using a high strength steel to reduce the weight of your application. Contact us to benefit from this tool.

And you can use ArcelorMittal’s Steel Advisor to help you choose the right Amstrong® grade for each application.
