  • Webinar: lightening the load

Discovering how the latest generation of high strength steels can reduce CO2 emissions.

ArcelorMittal and Wielton – one of Europe’s top three manufacturers of semi-trailers, trailers, and truck bodies, held a webinar on 15 November 2022 on how high strength steels can be used to manufacture stronger and lighter equipment while reducing CO2 emissions during manufacturing and fuel consumption on the road.

The storyline

Heavy-duty vehicles have an important role to play in the fight against climate change. They only represent 2% of vehicles on the road in Europe, but they are responsible for about a quarter of CO2 emissions and around 6% of total emissions in the EU. There is a lot to be gained by dramatically reducing the weight of these vehicles with advanced steels.

During this webinar, experts from ArcelorMittal and Wielton explained how they created a new generation of semi-trailers and tippers which are stronger, more durable, and up to 40% lighter. The cooperation between steelmaker and manufacturer has resulted in a more sustainable manufacturing process, and resulted in significant fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

The process began with a solid R&D approach including innovative designs, advanced calculations, prototyping, and live testing. At the manufacturing level, developments in technology, automation, digitalisation, clean energy, and waste and water reduction were considered.

OEMs such as Wielton require a wide range of steel products and solutions so they can achieve the right mass, strength, and stiffness for each part. Solid service and delivery from ArcelorMittal enables OEMs such as Wielton to implement individual solutions and tailor their equipment to the specific needs of each part.

The webinar was supported by real-life case studies, facts, and figures. ArcelorMittal also presented its plans for the ultra high strength steels (UHSS) of the future and its massive investments in decarbonising steel production.

The 40 minutes presentation was followed by a question and answer session.
